Located halfway between Oakville in Napa Valley and Glen Ellen in Sonoma County, just over the Sonoma County border, this romantic retreat is a one-of-a-kind estate. Designed for an authentic experience of Wine Country, the beautifully decorated home and its lavish grounds create a setting where you will want to linger and forge memories of your own. .
Trinity Road takes you from the Sonoma Valley to the crest of the mountain and down the eastern slope to Napa Valley. It winds through unspoiled land past secluded enclaves and spectacular estates that are unknown to most visitors to the region. Turning into Villa Nel Bosco, you'll discover a broad, open meadow that sweeps down through a working vineyard of premium Syrah grapes and onward to a lush expanse of emerald green lawn.
At the foot of the meadow is a Tuscan-style home; its warm, earthen tones and clay tiled roof harmonize with the natural setting, and an arched entryway welcomes visitors into this idyllic estate. Crushed Sonoma Gold rock paths encircle the home, offering their own internal glow and flower beds burst with brilliant colors and a mix of native plants.
Luxurious amenities, such as the sparkling new pool with a sunken whirlpool spa, and an outdoor shower and changing room, are enhanced by the backdrop of mature oak and pine trees that create a totally private environment.
A well-equipped grill lets you savor the succulent flavors of barbequed meats and fresh vegetables. Dine al fresco in an exquisite outdoor space in the dappled shade of a wooden pergola entwined with flowering vines, or choose a more casual meal around the pool with the refreshing sounds of the stone fountain in the background.
Enjoy the warm sunny skies of wine country as you relax on a contemporary woven chaise lounge by the pool, or join in the activities and try your hand at the nearby bocce court. On the great lawn, you can challenge friends to a game of volleyball, badminton or croquet.
Below the balcony is a conversation area of comfortable chairs ringed around a unique firepit of stacked "cannonball"-like forms. At the edge of the lawn and vineyard is a venerable old oak tree, a setting that could be a scene painted by the early Impressionists.
Hiking the hillsides opens up new sights and glimpses of nature and the three-acre property is completely fenced.
Villa Nel Bosco was constructed as a romantic retreat and every aspect adds to the atmosphere of celebration and shared joy. From the moment you step through the deep portico, its three arches flanked by Italian Cypress trees, and open the wide mahogany door, you are drawn into its charm.
A curving staircase descends from the second floor, creating a graceful entryway, which opens to the various main floor rooms. The wall above is hung with original art commissioned for the home.
Built using sustainable materials such as the insulating Rastrablock walls, the home stays cool in summer and warm in winter. Each room has windows and doors that open to the grounds. Rich green wooden exterior shutters imported from Italy are practical and decorative. The interior walls are hand-done in Venetian plaster with a soft, sand tone and all the floors have radiant heat, making the house comfortable in any season.
There is a sense of relaxed sophistication throughout the home and grounds. A novel use of reclaimed materials, repurposed in an artful manner, connects cultural artifacts, family heirlooms and vintage treasures with contemporary pieces in a fascinating mélange that allows for discovery.
The main floor is designed for an easy flow, yet provides quiet spaces for time alone. The kitchen—always the hub of the home—is well equipped for gourmet preparation or a simple and delicious meal of local ingredients. Stainless steel appliances and oak cabinetry are a visual contrast to the custom concrete counters and floors. Have a casual breakfast or lunch break at the counter, or just kibitz with the cook.
The kitchen is open to the dining area and its hand-hewn table and leather chairs. As all doors lead out to the grounds, it's also easy to have your meals outdoors, either around the pool, under the vine-covered pergola, or even across the lawn under the great spreading oak. At night the lighted trees twinkle like fireflies and the firepit offers its warmth as the evening cools.
Beyond the dining room is a media room/den with a large flatscreen TV, media center and some unexpected touches such as authentic mid-century modern leather chairs, a zinc cabinet and a leather couch with contrasting canvas pillows. The house is wired for sound that can be controlled from individual rooms.
A guest half-bath with copper sink and custom vanity is located between the kitchen and front of the house.
Massive carved wood doors match line of the archway into the front guest bedroom and roll closed. The two twin beds face the window to the lawn and vineyards—a scene almost too perfect to be real. Lose yourself in contemplation from the down-covered bed, or curl up on the window seat. The room has artisan iron lamps and a burlap rope hanging light fixture and two armoires, one with a flatscreen TV. All the iron fixtures were made for the home in Mexico.
In the living room you can sink into the butter-soft cushions of the tufted leather couches. A slat table sits between them on a thick carpet in front of the stone wood-burning fireplace. It's easy to envision an evening with friends, sharing a glass of port and good conversation with the crackle of the fire in the background.
On the second floor the staircase widens out to a landing and an alcove with a unique "two-partner" antique desk. The polished wood plank floor continues throughout the second floor and the vaulted ceilings are natural wood with broad beams.
Three arched glass doors lead out to a wrought-iron balcony romantic enough for Romeo and Juliet. The vista is sensational, with an unforgettable sweep of the lush green lawns and the trim rows of vines marching up the hillside. Memories are sure to be made on this veranda.
The master bedroom is an oasis of tranquility. A sumptuous king bed with a linen headboard faces the wood-burning fireplace with its raised hearth and beamed mantle. Dark gray herringbone armchairs and two chocolate-colored leather chairs offer cozy seating areas and a rare Dutch Colonial wooden cabinet from Java contains a flatscreen TV. The vaulted ceiling gives a feeling of space and intimacy at the same time. There is a glass door that opens to an almost secret petit balcony overlooking the bocce court. A wonderful "brides" mirror stands against the wall, fastened with a knot of ships rope—a symbol of luck—and the walk-in closet provides plenty of room for a special wardrobe.
An oversized soaking tub in the master bath is just the thing for the end of a celebration or can be a simple indulgence. Gaze out at the vine-covered pergola and pool below as your cares disappear. There's a glass-walled shower with European-style fixtures, a custom concrete vanity with two sinks and a separate toilet.
A second bedroom with its wide windows creates a painterly impression of the grounds. Furnished with a fluffy king-size bed and a blend of elements such as an Indonesian headboard, a zinc chest and crisp linens, the room has an inviting air. There are ample closets and a Flatscreen TV.
The third bedroom has a fresh country quality and contains a queen bed. This room has a flatscreen TV, double closets and a vaulted wood ceiling. Windows bring the outdoors in and keep you in complete privacy, and a glass door opens to the sleeping porch.
The two guest bedrooms share a spacious bath with two ceramic sinks and a custom marble counter. The stucco walls are finished in a cool, blue, and the theme is carried into the separate shower and toilet with light blue stone tile.
But, in what is perhaps the most enchanting and inspirational use of a space, the rear balcony overlooking the pool has been turned into an "Arabian Nights" fantasy. A cascade of billowing muslin curtains envelopes the bed, made by hand in a rustic style—and transforms it into an exotic escape during the day and at night, a serene connection with nature unlike any other.
With so many exceptional and captivating aspects to experience, you will want to linger at Villa Nel Bosco, finding your own set of memories to take with you.
